It would have been hard if I hadn't taken modes of arguments where I was taught how to debate and had two debates to do in that class. I was surprised with the class reactions, but hey you can't have it all. I wish they had understood the ways of debating. It's not an informal thing and if our side seemed like we were attacking, well, that would be a compliment. But really it was not our intention. We took the debate seriously from the way we dressed, spoke and presented each element. I was a little hurt with the reactions to be totally honest. The classroom debate to an extent was "for show", we got into the roles and completed the assignment above and beyond. I felt good about it!!!!

:)

Katrina Symposium

I went to the symposium at 10am and heard ms. brazile speak. I think everyone had a great day with them and picked really interesting speeches. I don't think any of the speeches were at random since everyone spoke with passion (you know what i mean?) it seems that the speech they chose was important to them and tht helps and shows when they delivered them. I espeically loved hillary's. I don't know why though? The entire biography informative speech to me would have seemed over used and wacky but THE WAY she approached it was so fun. especially since the person she spoke about was not like Britney Spears or someone who was just so "famous" and heard of that it would have been boring. For an informative speech to be good i really think that the persong iving the speech should make the audience want to learn even more about the person they were talking about. I definately want to learn more about her. (sad how i forget the naem but it started with a B) but i'm so goign to ask hillary her full name and search her life. It's just so interesting...her speaking is always really good. she stays on topic, and engages the audience. I really ljust like her persona. she never seems tobe nervous and is very chill when giving speeches, but at the same time passionate with her words.

Informative speech

I don't know how i feel about it. I thought that my organization was 200% better tahn last speech. It's so ironic though, I'm the type of person who talks too long and I had in the back of omy mind don't talk to long, and so it's like i talked not long enough. I'm really dissapointed with that. I wisih maybe instead the prof dunn could say your at 4 minutes and then at five but his hand up. because to know if you're at 5 is nearly impossible. I don't know really. It kinda just sucks. I practed this thing like over 10 times. I finished my outline on the day the assignment was given. In terms of being louder? well, i ahve a chronic ear infection at this point, so I can't even hear myself talk so that worked against me. I was cold, Not nervous and sick. so id on't know they all equate somehow i'm sure. waht i'd change? is not to be sick on speech day. talk slower? i guess it's just really weird. i was not in the zone too. it sucks when you stand up there and you know what you're saying, you practice everyday 3 times at least. and then you blow it.

lyke omgz

I go tomorrow for my informative speech. The thing with taht is we have like 8 of us presenting and we have dialogues and discussions. I mean we have individual speeches too, but I always go up with an essay written and I memorize it. so the entire outline thing is really awkward for me..ill get used to it though. I really enjoyed all of them. I really liked Sophia's because her emotion and passionate way of describing Madeline was artistic. I don't know if the image of madeline could have been more vivid. I felt after listenign to that speech that I knew madeline. It was an emotional narrative, but i think she did a good job staying calm and collective.

The narrative about women being abused was enthralling. It was so unique and startling, that it was interesting and true with the statistics that she gave. (anna) or with one n? anyway, I really thought her dialogue worked amazingly.

AND THEN we have Gina. oh man. it was just so entertaining and so true and so funny and I was like YES tahts totally how italian grandmothers are! IT was very dynamic in the way she 'performed' it. the dialogue. the expressions. the excitement in her face..everything was just so good. She captured her grandmother and the dynamics of her family very well! yay

overall, everyone's doing such a great job. No one's fainted yet.

-gaby

me gustaba...

Narrative Speeches....
I was and not to be mean, but extremely amazed with every single person who spoke. Maybe it's easiest for this instance to give a speech that is close to the heart becuase there is something to say. I'm glad though that there was one speech that was not as deep, just to lift up the spirits a little and want an apple haha.

But really. The speech that really caught my attention was (I don't know names..) but speech number one who really went 2nd becuase the T train was late or something. What I really enjoyed was, well one, that it wasn't a made up story that it was real and that could just see that this kid he was talking about really is his best friend. Just the way his voice moved with his speech, and how he'd laugh at some parts fit with what he was trying to say. there really isn't anything I can say that I didn't like about the speech or what to work on. It was a job well done.

my other favorite speech was the story of a girl who at age 19 found herself pregnant. The attention getter, It's me, I'm pregnant call me back, was a unique way to start off this type of story. I do like how she stuck in the statistics at the end. Her entire delivery was smooth and flawless. If she was nervous I don't think anyone would have known it. I was totally blown away by her speech giving skills. I'm pretty sure during our grabbag speech days she was one of the speakers who stuck out for me. Very composed.

I'm excited to see the rest of these narrative speeches. I'm learning a lot about my classmates. I'm understanding them maybe more so than he/she would want but that's what happens when a person let's someone get to know them. Don't be afraid. Let the world know who you are and what you are about. And everyone who put their heart on the line last class, I think it's awesome and takes courage because you just shared a part of your lives to literally a group of strangers and that's not a bad thing. It's admirable.

Thomas Dunn Told Me To Write About This

Dear Class,
Well, let's see my major concerns for my speech is this......or should I say my rhetorical concerns are really making sure I don't talk too fast or too slow. Basically what I'd like to achieve is to keep my speech at a steady and able to listened to pace.

I wrote way too much for my outline. but let me honest. honesty is key. I'm really not worried. I always learned it's best to have more. I know how to cut it down, i know the 411. I'm hip. At any rate. I've been giving speehches since I was 14 years old. A young lass I was. Is las with one or two S's? Well, I don't get nervous. I come organized, I just usually don't go to the bathroom before. kidding. See my troubles, 'muh struggles,' haha I ramble. Interestingly enough, I was kinda in a school newspaper for a few days called the Ramblings. Sin embargo.

My speech is something near and dear to me, but I'm not telling you it. Sophia knows! Right now I'm working on my 2nd draft of my outline. (typed out OF COURSE. SIZE 14 FONT TIMES NEW ROMAN IF YOU WILL.) I have other lingering thoughts on my mind, like why was my coffee so good this morning and yesterday when I got a some chai with vanilla flavored extract in it. I wonder. And then I say to myself, "self, no one cares." And then oddly enough I end up in the Emerson Library, 3rd floor of Walker Building, typing out a blog for all you uninterested people to read.

I give my speech on Wednesday. I believe a dear fellow of mine named, Will is going on that day as well. yay for us! okay well, I totally have no idea what I'm typing anymore. I am sure I will be fine, I am not known for fainting spells, but I do sweat profusely when I eat Indian food.

Ciao for now,
gabriela alicia bruno-vitarelli

post script: prof dunn! hiiiiii

As I sit in class...

There really is no room for introduction, but I suppose I will introduce myself. My name is Gaby. I am in fundamentals of speech comm blogging my brains out. As I'm not a professional blogger, please bare with me. I have many goals in this class. I am not an aspiring public speaker, but I would like to gain as much knowledge and techniques in preparing and giving a speech. I have many other goals that are simpler and less complex, but all in all, I would really like to be able to speak to a crowd without cracking a joke or what have you. Though I think I can formulate grand ideas and subjects to speak on, my main 'problem' is trying not to laugh. hahaha. <-- kind of like that.

Well, you beautiful blog readers. I must go. I really must! (obviously I'm still writing, so my having to go isn't as vidal as one might think). Enough with the chitchat. I'm going to lunch. peace out. ps. tupac is alive. thanks ya'll.

chau,
gaby
